Gothsu is a very similar to Sambar but not frequently made like a Sambar in most homes. Ideal as a side dish for idli, dosa or pongal.

Sundakkai Gothsu

Ingredients:

  • Sundakkai – 1/2 cup, chopped and soaked in water
  • Asafoetida – a pinch
  • Shallots – 1/4 cup, finely chopped
  • Mustard Seeds – 1/2 tsp
  • Tomato – 1, finely chopped
  • Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
  • Sesame seeds – 1 tblsp
  • Tamarind Water – 1 cup
  • Curry Leaves – few
  • Coriander Leaves – to garnish
  • Oil – as required
  • Salt to taste

Grind Together:

  • Coconut – 2 tblsp, grated
  • Red Chillies – 4
  • Jeera – 1/2 tsp
  • Coriander Seeds – 1 tsp
  • Bengal Gram Dal – 1 tblsp

 

Method:

  1. Dry roast the sesame seeds in low flame.
  2. Allow it to cool and grind them.
  3. To the same pan, add the ingredients listed for grinding and fry well.
  4. Allow them to rest and grind it to fine paste.
  5. Take a pan and saute shallots in oil.
  6. Add the chopped tomato and sundakkai and fry them.
  7. Add the tamarind water, turmeric powder and the required salt.
  8. When it starts to boil, add the ground paste with enough water and cook till the gravy becomes thick.
  9. Add powdered sesame seeds and remove from fire.
  10. To another pan, add oil and fry the mustard seeds, curry leaves and when it splatter, add it to the gravy.
  11. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot.
  12. This kothsu will kill any germs in the stomach.
