Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use frozen blackberries instead of fresh?

While fresh berries are ideal for their vibrant flavor and color, you can without a doubt use frozen blackberries in a pinch. Just be sure to thaw and drain them well before adding them to the batter to prevent excess moisture.

Can I make this coffee cake ahead of time?

Without a doubt. This Blackberry Coffee Cake can be baked a day or two in advance and stored in an airtight container at room temperature. It’s a great way to get a head start on your baking when expecting guests or planning a special brunch.

What type of nuts do you recommend for the streusel topping?

The streusel topping can be customized with your favorite nuts. Chopped almonds, walnuts, or pecans all work beautifully and add a lovely crunch to the buttery crumb topping.

Can I substitute the blackberries for another type of berry?

Surely. This coffee cake is versatile and can be made with other fresh berries like raspberries, blueberries, or even a mix of your favorites. The flavor will change slightly, but the end result will still be delicious.

How do I know when the coffee cake is fully baked?

The easiest way to check if your Blackberry Coffee Cake is done is to insert a toothpick or skewer into the center. If it comes out clean or with just a few moist crumbs clinging to it, your cake is ready. You can also gently press the top – it should feel set and spring back lightly.
