Fried Onion Rings are a classic appetizer or snack that everyone loves. These crispy rings have an addictive crunch thanks to the seasoned batter. You’ll want to make a big batch to share (or keep all for yourself.).
About the Recipe
If you love that irresistible crunch from the first bite into a fried onion ring, this recipe is for you. The simple batter gets tons of flavor from garlic, ginger, and chili. Letting the onions soak first helps the batter stick and tenderizes them.
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
These onion rings have the perfect crispy-meets-tender texture that will have you snacking by the handful. The zesty batter seasoning is so flavorful and complements the sweet onion beautifully. They’re easy to whip up and endlessly snackable.
Cooking Tips
For maximum crunch, don’t overcrowd the onion rings when frying. Work in batches if needed. A high-temp frying oil like vegetable or peanut ensures the batter gets crispy before the onions overcook. And don’t skip briefly soaking the rings – it’s key for even batter coating.
Serving and Storing Suggestions
Fried onion rings are best enjoyed hot and fresh. Let them drain briefly on a wire rack before serving. This recipe makes a generous appetizer for 4-6 people. Leftovers will stay crispy for a day or two in an airtight container at room temp. Total prep time is about 1.5 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make these onion rings gluten-free?
Without a doubt. merely substitute gluten-free all-purpose flour or chickpea flour for the wheat flour. Rice flour and cornstarch work great too. Just be sure to use gluten-free breadcrumbs or skip them.
What type of onion is best for frying?
Sweet onion varieties like Vidalia work wonderfully since they’re low on pungent flavor. But yellow, white, or red onions all fry up nicely too. Just avoid super-strong flavors like shallots.
How do I keep the onion rings crispy?
Fry at the proper high temp to set the batter quickly before the onion overcooks. Then let the fried rings drain on a wire rack. They’ll stay crispy for a bit, but are truly best enjoyed fresh and hot.
What are some tasty dipping sauces?
Ranch, barbecue sauce, honey mustard, and ketchup are all classic choices. You could also try garlic aioli, comeback sauce, fry sauce, or spicy mayo for something different. Can I bake these instead of frying?
While baked onion rings are tasty, they’ll never achieve that ultimate crispy crunch and richness that comes from frying. But baking works if you want a healthier option.
