Mahni is a dish popular in the Himachal Pradesh and is an integral part of Himachali wedding or reception menus.
Ingredients:
Black Gram – 1 cup, soaked for 8 hours
Amchoor (Dry Mango Powder) – 3 tsp
Mustard Oil – 50 ml
Rice Powder – 3 tsp
Water – 750 ml
Jaggery – a small piece
Green Chillies – 5
Aniseed (Saunf) – 3 tsp
Sugar – 1/4 tsp
Red Chilli Powder – 2 tsp
Turmeric Powder – 1 tsp
Salt as per taste
Nutmeg – 1/8 tsp, grated
Cloves – 4
Mace – 1/4 tsp
Method:
1. Heat oil in a pan over low flame.
2. Add the red chilli powder, saunf, sugar, turmeric powder, nutmeg, cloves and mace.
3. Add black gram and cook for 5 to 6 minutes.
4. Add the mango powder and cook for another minute.
5. Mix the rice powder with 250 ml water and pour into the pan.
6. Stir well and bring to a boil.
7. When the curry starts to thicken, add the jaggery, green chillies and remaining water.
8. Cook for 10 to 15 minutes.
9. Add salt and mix well.
10. Serve hot with rice.

Awesome. Is there any other method of making ‘Mahni’ like Pathankot Style and Jammu Style ?
